The house
was built in 1940 and has housed several families here over the last 80
years. While her floors are a little
sloped in places, she is solid – she has been lovingly restored by your hosts, Jamie
and Mark. We have made every effort to
keep as much of the home as original as we could, and the original bedroom
floors (newly exposed after decades under linoleum) are a testament to that
effort. We added a large picture window in the front room to better enjoy our mountain views. The kitchen has been
updated with a new floor, butcher block countertop, refinished cabinets and a
new range hood. The Hoosier cabinet (on
the left as you enter the kitchen), is not original to this house but would
have worked well in a country kitchen such as this. The kitchen table was found locally and is
approximately 160 years old (note the square nails holding the two very wide
pine planks in place – this was typical of pre-Civil War furniture). Take a look inside the table’s little drawer –
it was lined long ago with the penmanship efforts of a long-forgotten student!
The Master Bedroom,
located off the kitchen, now has its fabulous oak floorboards exposed
again. This house was constructed of
four nearly identically-sized rooms (with no inside bathroom) and the door to the
right as you enter would have opened to the outside. Now it opens into a fully-updated laundry
room with brand-new washer and dryer and a view to the backyard. The door on the left opens to the “new”
bathroom, constructed by borrowing space from the Guest Room and built several
decades ago. The bathroom has been fully
updated, with a modern pedestal sink and modern shower for your
convenience. The Guest Bedroom boasts a Full-sized bed, a sitting area with
an electric fireplace and a brand-new built-in closet. In the
back yard you’ll find a relaxing fire pit area where you can share a drink and
tales of your day’s adventures while enjoying a fire and a great mountain
view. If outside dining is desired, you
can enjoy the back deck area with room to prepare food on the gas grill!
